Alva Hill ~ Butler Architect

Ralph Burt, Dick Rittelmann, John Kosar and Alva Hill 

Alva Hill [right] was the founder founder of the Butler architecture firm, Burt,Hill. He started with the firm in 1952, along with Ralph Burt. Although Burt-Hill is now a multinational firm (and is being acquired later this year by a Canadian firm), the largest office still is in Butler, employing roughly 150 people here.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hill was an accomplished pilot fighting in World War II flying a P51 Mustang fighter plane. Consequentially, Mr. Hill met Mr. Burt during the war and returned to their hometown of Butler to make architectural history.

Richard Strange was conductor for the Butler symphony from 1965 to 1974. He was our third permanent conductor.

Richard Fudoli ~ Musician ~ BHS '54

Karl Probst ~ Designer of the Jeep

Karl Probst [center] was rightly called the "Father of the Jeep" and thanks to him Butler was duly given the celebrated nickname "Home of the Jeep". Probst designed the vehicle in just 18 hours in 1940, and it took our Bantam company 49 days to make the original, which was cloned for use by the U.S. Army

Joan Chandler ~ Actress ~ BHS '40

The actress Joan [Cheeseman] Chandler was born 24 August 1923 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Lived on McKean Street across from the library. She starred in such movies as Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948) and Humoresque (1946).

Brig. Gen. Peter J. Talleri ~ BHS '75

From July 2006-June 2008 Brigadier General Peter J. Talleri of Butler, Pa. commanded 3d Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan. In June of 2008, General Talleri reported to the Defense Logistics Agency for duty where he presently serves as Commander, Defense Distribution Center.

James Pugh ~ BHS '68

Our James Pugh has had a distinguished career as a freelance trombonist, composer, and educator. His playing crosses all boundaries. He has been recorded in small-group jazz improvisational settings with such artists as Joe Lovano, David "Fathead" Newman, and André Previn. He has recorded classical chamber music with Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble as well as the chamber music of Paul Bowles, Irwin Bazelon, and Ben Johnston. He has been a featured soloist on Grammy-Award winning recordings with Woody Herman and has recorded large orchestral works with the Eos, Concordia, St. Luke's, and 92nd Street Y Orchestras. Jim is well known for his musical integrity, inspiring improvisation, virtuosity, and all-encompassing versatility.

In NPR's year-end round-up of the Best of 2008, trombonist James Pugh’s new recording X-Over Trombone of three jazzy concertos stands out on top.

William Morgan ~ Esteemed Butlerite

Bill Morgan started his career as an entrepreneur as a small boy delivering newspapers in Meridian, where he walked up and back a half-mile lane, all for two cents per paper. He ended up with a chain of 52 restaurants serving Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.
