Clara Barton Visits Butler ~
Photo: civilwaracademy.com
Clara Barton, Civil War nurse and founder of the America Red Cross spoke at the present Hill United Presbyterian Church on Brady and Second Streets when she came here to help with the great Typhoid Epidemic in 1903/1904. 127 people died in Butler and there were some 1,500 cases. About 1 out 13 people in Butler/Lyndora had typhoid. This was to be Barton's last mission for the Red Cross. It was her visit which started the Red Cross here in Butler. Clara Barton nursed at the Battle of Antietam.

Broad Street School ~
This picture was taken in Aug. 1973. I attended first through fourth grade at Broad St. school. My teachers were: Mrs. Helen McCandless (first), Ruth Goldblum (second), Miss Lilian Adami (third), and Mrs. Virginia Welton (not sure about that name) (fourth). I can still remember that each room had its own "cloak room" where we would hang our coats and keep our boots during the winter. The gym class was in the basement as were the bathrooms. B.Blum

Remembering Butler Firefighters ~
On April 8, 2001 Scott Wilson [left] and Anthony Murdick [below], both 25, died while attempting to recover the body of kayaker Neil Balcer, 23, from the Slippery Rock Creek near McConnell's Mill. We have not forgotten these dedicated men.
More that 500 fire departments sent firefighters and trucks to participate in the funeral procession. They came from as far away as Texas.

It was his voice. We knew him as a business man. But his true love was music. He had a rich baritone voice and was in demand as a soloist. His voice graced many a choir here and in Western Pennsylvania.

Alva Hill ~ Butler Architect
Ralph Burt, Dick Rittelmann, John Kosar and Alva Hill
Alva Hill [right] was the founder founder of the Butler architecture firm, Burt,Hill. He started with the firm in 1952, along with Ralph Burt. Although Burt-Hill is now a multinational firm (and is being acquired later this year by a Canadian firm), the largest office still is in Butler, employing roughly 150 people here.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hill was an accomplished pilot fighting in World War II flying a P51 Mustang fighter plane. Consequentially, Mr. Hill met Mr. Burt during the war and returned to their hometown of Butler to make architectural history.

Pullman Park ~
Pullman Park, built in 1934, was used for minor league baseball for twenty years until the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team left in 1951. The ballpark saw many famous faces during its professional baseball days, including Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford, and Joe DiMaggio who played for a farm team of the New York Yankees.
As of 2009 Pullman Park is the home of the Butler Blue Sox.
