There is a brass 10 by 12 box containing some Civil War veterans info and copies of some of the speeches given at the dedication. George Fleeger, a second lt. in 11th PA Reserves and Prisoner of War at Libby Prison in Richmond delivered the dedication speech. George built in 1872 and lived at 228 East Pearl Street. Some of the older folks would remember Miss Clara Bartley (teacher at the High School) living in this house. Miss Nellie Cratty, a little 11 year old girl did the unveiling.

Clara Bartley was my Sunday Junior Church teacher at Saint Andrews in about 1947. I loved her but my father didn't care for her. They may have been colleagues at the BHS.

Mention of the Civil War, reminds me of William Cruickshank (believe that's the spelling) who lived the final six months of his life with the Rev. and Mrs. McMillan in the Hull Plan. He was Mrs. McMillan"s uncle and was 101 years old. Served in the Army of the Potomac and had seen Lincoln, Grant and Sherman. As a nine year old I was enthralled and I think that created my interest in history.

I am preparing an April slideshow/talk on Butler Faces and Places of the Civil War and would be interested in more information about William Cruickshank or Rev and Mrs. McMillan.
