The new High School was built in the early 1960s.

I lived and grew up at the bottom of Fairground Road (West Butler). Remember it well

The High School was opened in 1961, a state of the art facility built in a campus style. In retrospect, it was a reflection of the post WWII boom and economic expansion of the 50's. The fact that there was one (and only one) high school was the great leveler and opportunity for all the kids of the town. The success of many of the grads in business, athletics, education, etc. was in part fueled by the community's willingness to provide their children with the most modern facility and staff as possible. It was the best and at least 5-10 years ahead of surrounding towns.

That open capus might have been great for California, but the cold winds of winter made for miserable travel between buildings.

Rember the sidewalk that went from Hanson Ave to the school. It was a long up hill walk. Walked it many times when we missed the bus. On purpose !
