This one is at the top of New Castle Hill right close to BHS entrance.
I have not been to Butler in a few months, but I think it's still there...perhaps in need of fresh and colorful paint. (At least it's still there in my mind's eye.)
New Castle Street hill would not be Route 8 -- Route 68?
yes it's still there...when it opens,it's a harbinger of spring and the end of school
Edwards dairy queen is still there, I know the guy that owns it. It still does a booming business.
This is actually the dairy queen on New Castle Rd.(Rt. 356) right by the HighSchool entrance
I love that Dairy Queen! I always eagerly awaited the reopening in the Spring. To me, that was the first true sign of Spring. I loved to order a small vanilla cone with sprinkles and sit on the tiny hill out back with my friends. We would eat our treats and giggle till our stomachs ached from the joy of laughing.

Yep, in the same place and goin' strong. I stopped there not too long ago.

He built the first Dairy Queen in Nixon, which was
across Rt. 8, just north
of the Country Kitchen
Restaurant.
He then started the 2nd
one on 356 near the High
School
I worked at the DQ by the high school for years. Mr. Edwards was the best "First" boss a person could have. He kept a very clean restaurant but was kind and caring to the girls who worked there. Such nice memories!

You might be thinking of Martin O'Brien. I am Martha O'Brien, more fondly known as Marty by my friends. I am quite a bit younger than the male Marty but he's much more distinguised than I.
I can remember going to the DQ in the fall after football practice (Penn St. Cardinals). You just can't find places like that these days. That was almosst 30 yrs ago for me.
My grandparents (Dan and Clara Joseph) owned that DQ before selling it to Jim Edwards. I have fond memories of going in the back door and coming out with Dilly Bars, ice cream cones, etc. Jim is a dear family friend. My dad grew up in the DQ and talks about how he'd fill sundae cups with hot fudge and drink the gooey chocolate!

it's the only dairy queen in butler worth going to.
the dairy queen pictured is on rt 8 south of butler about a mile or two from the airport. this is not the one that is next to butler high school. the one by the high school is the best one in butler no question.

Going to the Dairy Queen was a special treat for us!
I remember one time when our Aunt Mame was visiting and we all went after supper one summer evening.
The new thing was an ice cream cone that you could have dipped in chocolate (or a couple other things - one was red, maybe strawberry). Well, most of us wanted to try that. The person who was fixing them did the first few just fine.
When my turn came, the process was not quick enough and the ice cream ended up in the chocolate. This happened several times - so that when she/he finally got it made, we all cheered! :)

I think the Butler one by the High School isn't as good as the others.
Edwards Dairy Queen by the high school is the only one in town worth going to. Brazier store sucks. Acord's is a little weird. North Main Ext. has big portions but crappy generic toppings.

This DQ is the best in Butler; however, they are a little pricer than the others and a little skimpy on the whip cream. The DQ on Route 8 north towards the Pioneer Drive inn has much larger portions and for less $, BUT, the fudge and toppings are definitely not as good!
Back in the mid 60s, my family used to go to the Dairy Queen that was on the way to the Roller Skating Rink, is this that DQ and is the roller rink still there?
Ah yes, the opening of Dairy Queen meant spring had arrived. Good memories. I see there is a comment that says Mr. Edwards was grabbing the girls. I am a BHS 1976 grad, and it was a well known fact among my friends that he did that. I had a friend who worked there for a short time and quit over it. The days before sexual harrassment laws.
I must agree.. that picture is the one from route 8 south. Look at the building behind it. That used to be some sort of place that sold China or something. The one by the high school had a motel behind it.

Dad also had Dan's Diner but tore it down in 1976 to build Joe's Steak House. Later dad sold which was Our home (behind the DQ) to the owners of The Auto Zone Store. Dad sold the DQ to Jim Edwards who still now runs it. Just think back then DQ cones were 10,15 and 25 cents. And banana splits were 49 cents.
I have so many memories of the area when it was the entrance to the Butler Fair Grounds. Awe,those Friday night stock car races were nice and noisy.
