Wow! What has happened to the swimming pool.Use to go there with the Whitehill family (think that was the spelling. They lived on Chestnut St. A long time ago. Wasn't there a skating rink up above the merry go round? Used to ride the trolley or even walk out there!
The swimming area had been closed for many, many years. There is now a swimming pool in upper Alameda. I remember going down into the woods and climbing on the old cement breast of the original pool. Several years ago some goofball govenment agency had the old remnants of the pool removed because it caused a "flood danger" to downtown Butler. I think it cost us about $100,000.00 to remove.
There are still parts of the walls of the pool remaining on the side of the pool by the road. The side of the pool had slanted walls and a boardwalk ran along the entire length of the pool. The pool opened in 1922 and was heated and also had a filtration system. There were at least three drownings in this pool during its 20 years of existence.
How neat about the pool that used to be there, I had no idea, but I know where the swimming pool head is/was that some other comments mentioned. I didn't know what it was. I'm not sure if it's still there. When I was in school, we'd have our "end of the year" picnic at Alameda.
I found this site looking up information on Circus Town. My husband thought it would be neat if I photographed the place, but we were sad to see what we saw. All the major buildings and gate were gone. I posted the photos on my blog that I took today: http://strobelshappenings.blogspot.com/2011/11/circus-town.html
You have such a neat sight! I homeschool my kids and there are lots of neat, historical places around that I didn't even know about!
I am looking for photos and stories about Alemada Park for an upcoming talk and book about the amusement park. If you would like to share any of the above, please e-mail me at privateh@zoominternet.net
I went to a slideshow/talk on the park last Thursday sponsored by the Butler Historical Society. It was so well done and the speaker (Bill May) was very entertaining and just told the best stories. He was one of the best speakers I have ever heard and I hope they have him back next year.

They're keeping the place up. I wonder if it is used much. Back when I was a kid it was a big attraction. A streetcar ran out there.
I just love the history of the park.
The place looks great. Who maintains the grounds and buildings?

A special place for Charmiann and I. We were married there August 3rd 1994 in a beautiful ceremony.
