Mrs. Gretta Phillips lived in this house. She often entertained her Butler friends here and also members of the Butler Soroptimist Club of which she was a member.
My mother worked as a maid for Mrs. Brandon in the late 30's. She said Mrs. Brandon occasionally "loaned" her to work at the Phillips Mansion when more servants were needed for large elaborate events. She was paid $2 per week by Mrs. Brandon but usually got a bigger tip than her weekly pay when she work at a mansion party.
the carriage house originally was a separate building used by ernies esquire for parties and banquets. ernie pandelos eventually turned it into a nightclub style bar that was called oscars pub. the house next door was the hanson house which was a mini mansion for one of the phillips daughters. it served as banquet facilities also and the upstairs was the private apartment of the owner of ernie's, ernie pandelos. the hanson house eventually became an upscale french restaurant called la tache, in the early 90's i believe. oscars pub and la tache eventually closed while ernie's esquire stayed open. both la tache and oscars re-opened briefly in 1985, but subsequently closed within a year or two. ernie's esquire closed a couple years later as did many ernie's other locations. i believe he still owns a restaurant in wheeling WV and when i was there a number of years ago, his son michael was still working there. - gary m.
Our wedding reception was the final event at Ernie's Esquire on May 24, 1986. It was a great place and they really took care of us...that story is too long to get into. One of the most hilarious things happened after the reception. My husband and I had the suite upstairs for the night and friends rented other rooms, so there was a big after party between rooms. Around midnight, the manager told us that hey had to let the dogs out to patrol for the evening. A Doberman and I believe a Rottweiler were the patrol dogs and they were serious about their job! When going room to room to continue partying,, it was essential to have a "lookout" and to run to the next room to avoid the dogs. There were a few close calls ..😅
This is where Oscar's Pub was, back in the early 80's, correct?
ReplyDeleteIf so, many a wild time was experienced there :)
go back earlier than that when it was called Ernie's Esquire Inn.

ReplyDeleteMy questions was - wasn't this, the old Carriage Garage, Oscar's Pub a part of "The Mansion" back in the early 80's?
