The Phillips Mansion ~ Rt. 8 South

Photo: Chuck Schneider

Once Ernie's Esquire Inn but now called "The Mansion".

It is an elegant venue for weddings, parties, corporate events.

This is where Oscar's Pub was, back in the early 80's, correct?
If so, many a wild time was experienced there :)

Mrs. Gretta Phillips lived in this house. She often entertained her Butler friends here and also members of the Butler Soroptimist Club of which she was a member.

My mother worked as a maid for Mrs. Brandon in the late 30's. She said Mrs. Brandon occasionally "loaned" her to work at the Phillips Mansion when more servants were needed for large elaborate events. She was paid $2 per week by Mrs. Brandon but usually got a bigger tip than her weekly pay when she work at a mansion party.

My questions was - wasn't this, the old Carriage Garage, Oscar's Pub a part of "The Mansion" back in the early 80's?

the carriage house originally was a separate building used by ernies esquire for parties and banquets. ernie pandelos eventually turned it into a nightclub style bar that was called oscars pub. the house next door was the hanson house which was a mini mansion for one of the phillips daughters. it served as banquet facilities also and the upstairs was the private apartment of the owner of ernie's, ernie pandelos. the hanson house eventually became an upscale french restaurant called la tache, in the early 90's i believe. oscars pub and la tache eventually closed while ernie's esquire stayed open. both la tache and oscars re-opened briefly in 1985, but subsequently closed within a year or two. ernie's esquire closed a couple years later as did many ernie's other locations. i believe he still owns a restaurant in wheeling WV and when i was there a number of years ago, his son michael was still working there. - gary m.
