Sheriff Dennis Richard might be a nice man, but thirty years is long enough at the public trough...need a change. Too much time by one person in one office tends to create a 'ruling class'; not what the Framers intended.

Anonymous said...

Framers?

Anonymous said...

Framers, that this, the writers, the people who 'framed' the U.S. Constitution. Perhaps a dictionary would help you understand and I don't mean that to sound unkind.

Anonymous said...

I am encouraging everyone that read this blog to please get out in vote November 3rd. The person who posted first is right, it has been 3 decades since Butler County has seen a fresh perspective in the Sheriff's office! I also urge Butler County residents to please to some fact checking on both candidates and make an informed vote and pick the best man for the job, because we may not see another sheriff race for another 30years. Wonder why a debate has not been schedule for these 2 candidates, would love to hear their views points and ask some questions.

Anonymous said...

What is the role of the Sheriff in Butler County? It seems to me that the Sheriff, in other areas, is much more involved in law enforcement. I would much rather see one of the many deputies patrolling the downtown area than transporting some two - bit thug to the new fancy jail.

Anonymous said...

I apologize for my ignorance, but I have never, in all of my life, heard the writers of the Constitution referred to as "Framers" --- I honestly thought that you had intended to write "Farmers" and made a typographical error.

Anyway, I sincerely feel that Roland Livermore has the edge in experience and overall knowledge, but Mike Slupe will win the election solely on popularity

Anonymous said...

Maybe you should GOOGLE "framers of the constitution." It won't take long for you to get up to speed.

James FL said...

There are too many people calling themselves 'anonymous' on this blog. I made the original definition of 'framers' and suggested the dictionary but DID NOT say anything about Goggle. From now on, I'll use my first name on my posts. Thanks.

goggle.. those are the things you wear over your eyes ,for protection, right?

Roland said...

There is a saying hanging in my Police station. "What is popular is not always right. What is right is not always popular".

I thank you for your kind words and recognition of my accomplishments. If I have your vote, it is one more for the right candidate than the popular candidate.

This is the second blog I have come across. I thank those who are interested in this race. Please check out my website at www.friendsofroland.com I hope to earn your support. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks for adding this Blog. We will see if a debate will happen.

Sincerely,

Roland Livermore
Candidate for Butler County Sheriff

This is the first time that I have come across this blog. No doubt about it--Livermore has the right credentials for the office, checked into both candidates and have to support Roland!

Roland Livermore definitely has my support, as well as my mother's and the majority of my acquaintances...and I'm proud to sign my name to this

Mike Slupe is one of the best karaoke singers that I have ever heard perform.

I hate karaoke, so I guess I'll vote for the other candidate.

The Sheriff of Butler County should be the most qualified person for the job, and that would be Roland Livermore. Roland is a Butler native and a graduate of Butler High School , through his law-enforcement career he has been consistently promoted from patrolman to Corpral to detective and with all the experience that he has gained in the streets of the bigger city ,now he will bring it all back to Butler County to make it a safer place to raise a family. Just as Roland did with his own family. His morals and ethics are of the highest quality with God Family and Country at the top of the list.I have not seen these qualties in any other canidate for this office. I believe with all my heart that this is exactly what Butler County needs in the comming years with the rising drug problems and the rise of gangs on the streets of Butler. Roland Livermore has my full support and that of my family and anyone else i may know throught Butler County. I hope that on NOV 3rd that the good people of Butler County see this as well. Good Luck Roland and see you at the polls.

MARK D.

P.S. Never heard Roland sing in public , but hear that he really can dance.

Mike Slupe is the man for the job. I can't wait to vote for a guy to whom I gave a swirly in Jr. High.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above post that Roland is running for office just so he'll have a full time job.

Anonymous said...

I thought he had a full time job at ccac?

Anonymous said...

Lets clear some things up, not sure where people are getting there info, but they are way off base. 1.- Roland could not have possibly been able to know when he moved back to Butler several years ago that Denny Rickard was going to retire unless he is some kind of fortune teller. 2. Roland had a full time job as chief of security at Community College of Allegheny County. He resigned when he realized how much time commitment it would take to run for Butler County Sheriff. 3. I believe Mike Slupe does not have a full time job and is working part time for Saxonburg, so both candidates are looking for a full time job. Let get our facts straight people before we post them.

Anonymous said...

Why confuse us with the facts?

Anonymous said...

So Roland quit a full time job and put his family at risk just to run for another full time job? Isn't that what he did with his Pittsburgh job too? Kind of reckless if you ask me.

Anonymous said...

Slupe does NOT know everyone in Butler. He does not know me , so i will not be voting for him. I do not like liver, gross so i will not be voting for him.

Roland said...

Hmmm, 16 years of marriage. We communicate, raise our children and we make decisions together. We live healthy and happy. Pittsburgh was very good to us. I didn't quit Pittsburgh. I moved on. We are closer to our family and friends now.

As for the statement that my family is at risk and reckless, That was a very shallow comment.

We have a roof over heads, food on the table, a loving family and living back in Butler County.

We thank you for your concern. Our family is doing just great.

Leadership skills, goals, and priorities are more important than someone’s personal life decisions. I want a sheriff who will be respected and who will respect the diverse people of Butler County, not just those in the middle class but those who are less fortunate. I want a sheriff who is familiar with the differences among the communities of geographical areas of the county. There is some value in being home grown but there is also value in getting out of the community for awhile and returning with fresh eyes and ideas. I do not want a sheriff who is part of the “Good old boys” network. The responsibilities of the sheriff include interacting with other officials outside of Butler County; those connections can be beneficial as well when addressing the needs of residents. I know Roland Livermore in different capacities but I would like to address his interest and investment in addressing issues of domestic violence. I have attended classes for self-defense taught by Roland. His understanding of the issues women face and the benefit of formal instruction was foundational to the classes. All of the women felt comfortable sharing their personal stories and were open to learning self-defense. Roland is knowledgeable, approachable, and personable a combination that can be hard to find.

I see where Candidate Slupe has backed out of the scheduled debate that was set for 10/14 and the alternate date of 10/7.He sites conflict of interest due to previous committments. Is this how he would handle the office of the Sheriff ? Both candidates will become puppets for the Federal and State law machines due to the County accepting money in the way of grants. I'll be writing in Barney Fife

Anonymous said...

It's time for the "Old Boys" network to end. Just because someone knows a secret handshake does not make him the best candidate. All you have to do is look at where things are today to see it is time for a change. Let's give the county back to the voters. I firmly believe that Roland is the man to do this. I have talked to and know both candidates for sheriff. Roland has my vote.

'The Talking Chair' said...

Several months ago I met Mike Slupe, and asked him straight away why he was running for Sheriff? He did not say he was running to enforce the laws, he did not say he was running to support the 2nd Amendment, he did not say he was running to bring a fresh face and ideas to the office, he simply said he was running, "because the current guy was retiring." He seemed to be a nice enough fellow, nice smile and handshake, great if your running for a slot on Wheel of Fortune, but not the top cop. On the other hand Roland Livermore has the education, experience, and temperment for the job. Roland at least engaged me on the issues relevant to the office. It's time for this major office to come into the 21st century, and Roland is simply the one to do it!

I see that the debate has been cancelled because Mike Slupe says he has a calendar problem and will be in Zeli to attend a monthly meeting for the F.O.P. I know for a fact that when he quit his Butler Twp police job he had to forfeit his F.O.P. membership as well. Those are the Lodge rules. Even as a part-time officer for Saxonburg, he cannot be a member - only full time officers are permitted. So, his lame excuse of attending the meeting is bogus. And even if it were true, since he would be in Zeli for the meeting, surely he could also attend a debate in Zeli right across the street. Most candidates would try to make two events in one night even if they were miles apart. I think it's obvious that he's afraid to face the voters in a debate with Livermore.

I was looking forward to a one-on-one formal debate of their qualifications, issues and viewpoints, and how they compared against each other. I think a lot of voters were.

I usually vote for the best qualified candidate for any political position. What better way to decide who is better than to see them side by side. If Slupe could not arrange his schedule to face his opponent for a one-time event on television and get countywide exposure (at no cost to his campaign), then he does not deserve my vote - or yours either.

reading down through this thread I see that Mike Slupe has never written anything on here himself, could it be that he has nothing to say?? Livermore has posted several times on here and i praise him for doing so it seems that he (livermore) truely cares enough to answer questions himself and not through a second party behind a fake name or no name at all.I feel that Livermore has the morals and ethics that is needed in the Sheriff's office in Butler County.I would not vote for a canadate that has other people fight for him while he sits by and watches from the sidelines that does not speak well for Livermore's oposition in this race. I will cast my vote for Livermore and anyone that I can talk into doing the same, I feel that a vote for LIvermore is a vote for change in county goverment and to rid the county of the good ol boys club that has been here for far to long.

I personally know Mr. Slupe and just want others to know what I know. He dated my friend throughout last year. She is a dear friend who is still battling cancer. She helped him with his campaign help run his face book and other sites to help get his name out there. she also went out of her way to to introduce him to the various cancer groups and organizations. When he won the primary, Mr. Slupe stated to her he has a campaign to run and does'nt need her or her cancer. Those that read this can make their own opinions about Mr. Slupe. I have just been irritated ever since it happened and have to say what kind of morals does this candidate have to do this to a woman that was so kind to him?

Again, Bill has went on other sites to cause conflict with my election. He(Mike) seems very passionate about using the FEAR MONSTER to create CHAOS to the voters.
I was told about the FOAC by another forum. I contacted Mr. Stolfer about the questionaire to fill out. After receiving this document I filled it out and returned it to him. He invited me to their next meeting to address the group (There was no stalking). I felt very good with speaking to the Gun passionate group. I listened to their concerns and learned some new things in the process. After reading this blog I have contacted Mr. Stolfer and informed him of this Blog. I feel he should know that his name has been brought into the mix.

As for Mr. Bill, you should check your facts before writing down things you cannot cash.

The shadow is right. I don't run from issues I address them. I can't say that about my opponent. He hasn't joined in on any of these blogs or forums. I repeat I will not bash my opponent, but I will speak the true with fact. The Butler Eagle printed the story on Tuesday the 6th. My opponent has cancelled the debate set up for Oct 14th due to a monthly meeting with the FOP. Which seemed to be funny, because the debate was going to be in the same town.

So I remain steadfast as to the kind of character and straight forward person to let the voters decide.

Ok Bill it is your turn to pull another MONSTER from under your Bed. You have sabatoged a blog and a forum. Frankly, I enjoyed the forum the the guys were really good people that I got a chance to meet.

I hope this clears up the issue. I am a firm believer of the 2nd Amendment and I will fight for the people of Butler County.

bill said...

well sir i do not know this other bill you are talking about but i have only posted here and this is my 3rd post. as for the FAOC meeting i was told this by someone who was there and gave me Mr. Stolfers card . frankly i do not see repating what i was told as sabotage i call that debate. so maybe you should get your facts straight because again i am not the bill you have seen elsewhere.

bill said...

so Mr Livermore please state your position on carry permits , high capacity ammo clips , semi- automatic assault weapons , so called armour piercing ammo . and one gun a month plans please address each.

Looks to me that this blog is all one sided here Bill. I don't think that Mr Livermore has to answer any of your questions because you would have had your answers if the canidate that you are supporting would have had the guts to face Mr Livermore in the debate that the voters of Butler County wanted.I see that questions have been posed to your canidate and his answers have been the same as he gave the voters a big fat zero. I feel that Mr Livermore has been more than patient with you and your baggering. I see this activity of your as nothing more than stalking of Mr Livermore and any person of sound mind would think the same. If your canidate is so affraid of faceing Mr Livermore on here and in a debate then how can he deem himself worthy to even think he would make a good Sheriff for Butler County. Mr LIvermore has made himself available to any and all voters of Butler County that have asked for his time, that does not just mean a hand shake and asking for their support as your canidate is so fond of doing. The only thing that I have seen of your canidate's qualifacitaions is he was a patrolman for 20 years,a very lack luster record when posed againsed Mr Livermore's . I really don't see how your canidate feels that he can be Sheriff when he dose not have the qualifications to be a deputy (lacking a 2yr degree) or any militare service. thies are questions that your canidate has been avoiding but that need to be addressed weather it be on here or a debate or at Cranberry meet the canidate night. I feelthat Mr Livermore need not defend his position to you but only to the voters of Butler County of sound mind of which you are not.nor anyone that wants to bagger and stalk from behind a keyboard.

bill said...

well again frankly this is the only place i have ever posted only instead of resonding and answering i have been attacked i did not say that mike slupe was my candidate . I posted what i was told then I asked for real answers if i do not get them then that is answer enough for me . Personally it just looks to me like like your tactic is if someone poses a question or make a statement you disagree with you just attack and make unfounded accusations against that person and never answer the question . actually i was voting for your guy till i was told about the FAoc meeting .i was voting for him because some of his close relatives told me his was a good guy. but now that i see your tactics i may not vote at all cause frankly i did not think much of mr slupe as a twp cop either . and good luck with this other bill you accuse me of being if he even exists. And frankly you have attacked me personally and made accuseations that are unfounded but maybe that is how you deal with anyone with whom you disagree. check my ip adress with this other bill if he exists and you will see how wrong you are.

To 'Bill' - who wrote that Mr. Livermore "wants to limit carry permits, supports magazine limits and weapons bans, and curtailment of your second amendment rights. a vote for him would be like a vote for nancy pelosi for sheriff".

Your elevator does not go to the top floor. Did you not take Government 101 in school. The Sheriff (no matter who he is) cannot make or amend any laws regarding all these gun issues or constitutional rights. That can only be done by state or federal legislators - like Nancy Pelosi. If you want to sound off on issues unrelated to the sheriff's race go write your views on her blog page.

The only service that a sheriff provides related to guns is issuing gun permits and collecting firearms when a PFA order is issued. Mr. Livermore has stated he will carry out those duties and even intends to improve it with the possibility of an online renewal system.

Hopefully we can keep this blog focused on its original topic which are issues related to the sheriffs race.

Roland said...

PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE MR. BILL
Please remember I am running a campaign. I cannot sit on this computer and wait for responses to come in.

As for the FOAC meeting, Hearsay in the court of law is not admissible. You have received your information third party. If your person is bias he will slant things my opponent's way. I had six to seven people stop me after my presentation. They wished me well and one is passing out literature for me. As for qualifications, I own guns and weapons (why would I want them to be taken away?) I instruct on the firing line ALL over Western PA. Can your candidate say the same?

Your candidate is my opponent. You came on this blog attacking me and you continue to do so. In my eyes, I cannot convince you no matter what I say. So meeting you is probably a moot point.

I thank all of you who have expressed your views to this blog. Please continue the positive feedback.

One thing for sure, my opponent has skirted the debate and the public's trust. I continue to be active through the blogs, forums, the streets and many other ways to show the residents of Butler County I care. The Nay sayers will always bring out a negative point. Take a closer look Mr. Bill. I have Leadership roles, aided laid-off officers in their time of need and have educated thousands of Law Enforcement individuals. I have placed my platform issues on my website.
Hmmmm, I rest my case! I would be willing to meet anybody, because what you see is true and I dont need to muddy the waters to gain a vote.

My proven Leadership and Proven Experience speaks loudly. My guestbook has unsolicited comments. People have given me awesome feedback concerning their interactions with me as a person, instructor and colleague.

The shadow brings up a good point! Did either candidate serve in the military, and if not, why not?

Henry Styles said...

I posted this on a different blog, but believe it is important enough to repeat here. It is about Mr. Slupes extra large campaign signs. In particular the one at the corner of Duffy Rd and Rt 356. This sign obstructs a drivers view and creates a hazardous condition at that intersection. Who will be liable when this causes an accident?

In fact, for someone who wants to be the top lawman, he does not set a very good example of abiding by the law. I have seen a half dozen of his signs that exceed the size limit ordinances. Either he believes he is above the law, the law doesn't apply to him, or that his 'good old boys' network of supervisors will look the other way.

I see Sheriffs in other parts of the USA that are out front fighting crime. It seems like our Sheriffs Department simply serves warrants, transfers local thugs to and from the Court House or Jail and hangs out in the Sheriffs Office.
Why is our department so seldomly seen????
They are like the City Fire Department. Just sit around and wait for something to happen.
That's a great topic for discussion. Why is Butler one of the last small cities in PA with a paid fire department? Let's go volunteer.

For those of you that might still be interested in a debate, I read on the Cranberry blog that the Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a 'meet the candidates' forum. It is to be this Thursday, Oct 22 at 6:30 at the Municipal Bldg on Rochester Rd.

Both candidates have said they will be there. So, we still might be able to see how they present themselves and evaluate their experience and qualifications.

It may not be a debate, but you can see them in action and form your own opinions. This will probably be the one and only chance to see them side by side responding to questions. Watch the body language, listen to the sincerity in their voice, and see if they are truthful and to the point in their answers.

May the best man win your confidence and your vote !!

I see Livermore wants to retain Deputy jobs that most likely are not needed. Does he realize who pays for the Court House armed babysitters?
Go to the Sheriffs Office some day and see how many extra hands they have waiting for something to happen. It looks like a division of the City Fire Department.
It sure is easy for these guys to spend our money.

Got a letter from The Firearm Owners Against Crime today they are endorsing Mike Slupe in this race.

Henry Styles said...

Read this in the Butler Eagle the other day, and agree with it 100%. Posted here - verbatim. It is common sense - how can you argue against it?

The Choice for Sheriff Is Obvious

I should start by saying that I have spoken to both candidates for sheriff and reviewed both of their resumes and talked with several people who know both men personally. I will be voting for Roland Livermore for the following reasons.

First, I believe a candidate should meet the qualifications for the job he is seeking. The governing county officials have set the education standards as having at least two years of college to apply for a job in the sheriff's office. Mr. Livermore meets this requirement, Mr. Slupe does not.

My next priority is that I want someone with personal characteristics that include high morals and ethics and honesty. They are reflected in his values and how he treats others. Mr. Livermore has these qualities, Mr. Slupe does not.

I want a sheriff with leadership and supervisory skills, and the experience to manage and run a 25-30 man department. Someone who has put together a budget and then had to operate within its limits. Mr. Livermore has done these things, Mr. Slupe has not.

I think our sheriff should have the experience of having served at different levels in the chain of command in law enforcement. Some one who knows about being a patrolman, a sergeant, a detective, a training officer, an academy instructor, a chief of police, and a security director. Mr. Livermore has held all these positions, Mr. Slupe has held one - a patrol officer.

I believe our next sheriff should have the commitment to better the office with proven programs and ideas. Mr. Livermore has demonstrated this experience, Mr. Slupe has not.

An finally, I am looking for a sheriff that will serve the citizens with professionalism, pride and distinction. Mr. Livermore will do exactly that.

These are the reasons I am voting for Roland Livermore, and believe you should too. He is without a doubt the best qualified candidate for the job, and that is what Butler County residents should have.

As it is said so often at election time--Don't always believe all the endorcements. for that matter, that is all that Slupe has on his mailing is endorcements---NO QUALIFICATIONS are listed, because he has none--only endorcements.

Let's get one thing straight. Mr. Slupe did not win this race because he was more qualified or liked more by people. He simply won because he's a republican and this is a republican county. The majority of republicans vote straight party and not for the most qualified candidate. Mr. Livermore ran his campaign with integrity and can be proud of how he lives his life every day. He was by far the most qualified candidate for this position. I'm not sure how Mr. Slupe can even look at himself in the mirror each morning. The Lord has many lessons to teach this man and I personally am looking forward to sitting back and watching it all unfold.

So Slupe won only because he ran as a Republican? If that's the case maybe Livermore should have ran against him as a Republican in the Primary and eliminated him then. Typical "vast right wing conspiracy" theory spouted out by a losing democrat.

From what I have heard, Sheriff Slupe is doing a great job of taking care of the outstanding warrants that had apparently not been worked on from the previous Sheriff.
