As a child, 50 years ago, I remember the brick pavers on this hill and of feeling a little scared owing to how steep it was; the hill opposite, on the way home, Main Street north, was paved, wider and not nearly as high, or so it seemed. Perhaps traversing it way more often made it seem so.

While I don't long for Butler in the same way as some, I am increasing intrigued by the memories many of these pictures bring up. But that's enough, the memories; I don't feel the need to return, especially since mostly only the dead remain in my hometown.

I remember this view well. I walked up and down it daily in the mid 60's on my way to Butler Jr. High School (yellow brick and red brick buildings).

I also walked up and down South Main to go to the Jr High School. 1975-1976. One of my best memories is the first time I rode my bike up the hill without stopping. I wish I was in that kind of shape now!

To anonymous.
I for one find the site very interesting. I live in Butler and spend 6 months a year at my Florida home. I still have many fond memories of Butler. If you don't long for Butler don't look at the site.

I, too, walked up and down this hill to the yellow and red junior and high schools in the late 50s. Also I sled rode down this hill during the Winter. How nice it was in the "good old days" to be able to get out and play.

I, too, well remember the brick paved south main street hill. And I remember we would go just off of Morton Ave where there was an observation tower which over looked the city of Butler Oh, so long ago

Great pic! Thanks for the memories.

The best part of South Main hill was the cemetery.....whippin eggs at cars as they went by...either on Main St., or on the other side, Three Degree Rd.
Insensitive? Yes...but what fun isn't?
Deal with it.

My mother lived on top of this hill on Cottage Ave. in the 30's & 40's. She walked this everyday to elementary school (Jefferson I think), and the yellow and red brick buildings. She was late for school occasionally so the janitor to the elementary school held the bell for her so she wouldn't be in trouble. Little did she know that years later she would marry his son.

I graduated in '61. i still marvel how we walked all over that town. If you wanted to go, you had to walk. I can't imagine telling my grandchildren they had to walk across that bridge and up and down that hill everyday!

I remeber it well. My girl friend in high school (now my wife of 40 years) lived on Ritter St - over the top near my gandma's on Metzger Ave. I used to walk (yes walk) from my house on old 422 past the High School and the Point to visit her - ain't love grand!!!!

I lived on Ritter Drive, now called "Balboa Court". (how weird is that?)My sister and I used to walk that hill to practice for the Catholic Daughters of America. We walked everywhere back then and was told I had the legs to prove it! Heeheheheeeeeee!! It is a grand view of Butler from atop that hill! "It used to be my playground", to borrow a line from Madonna's song.

South Main Street hill was a bear in the winter time. Going up or down on a snowy day was treacherous.

I lived at the top of that hill on Muntz Ave. and yes we walked everywhere. My children have grown up in Florida, I can't imagine what they would do if they had to walk up that hill. It was pretty tough in the winter, but we managed. What a great town, I miss living there. Becky
