Fr. Simon Conrad O.F.M. Cap.~

† 2013
Before entering the St. Fidelis Seminary in nearby Herman, Fr. Conrad lived on Polk Street in Butler. He was ordained a priest in 1946. Fr. Simon is widely remembered as a teacher, communicator and confessor. And till the end he was best known as a consummate gentleman and professional. Through all of his years of ministry, Father was known for his well-crafted and thoughtful preaching. On two occasions his audience was a national one. In 1954, he and fellow Capuchin Fr. Bertin Roll conducted the nation’s first televised youth mission, which was broadcast live for eight weeks on CBS network television’s “Look Up and Live.” In 1958, he also preached on CBS network radio’s “Church of the Air.” Father wrote two books: Master and Model, a life of Christ, and Brothers of the Sun, a brief history of the Capuchins, which had press runs totaling 40,000.

Nicole Luttrell ~ BHS '

"I was telling stories as soon as I had words to tell them with. But I started writing when
I was thirteen when I came to the dawning realization that this was something that
could be done for a living. That people could make their lives all about telling stories."

The Maridon Museum ~

The Maridon opened on May 8th, 2004. It is the only museum in the Western Pennsylvania region with a specific focus on Asian Art and Culture coupled with German Meissen porcelain. The museum — both the objects and the buildings that house them — is the gift of Mary Hulton Phillips. Patricia Lowry, writing in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, pronounced the Maridon a "gleaming little gem of a museum."

The former YMCA now CUBS Hall was the site of Friday night "Tumble Inn" dances in the gym from the 50's to 60's +. Not sure when they ended. As a teenager, it was "Be there or be square."

Sisters of Mercy ~ Teachers

RSM Cemetery, Cresson, Pa.

Sisters of Mercy

We went to the graveyard to find them
The nuns from grade school days
Lying beneath their crosses,
All there except one,
The delicate nun with soft hands
She whom we took music lessons from.

Alone with her now
In the convent parlor
Bending over her piano
She plays songs they had sung together.
And hears herself humming
When standing out among the crosses,
Tearless, she confided,
For having to wait so long.

She looks away
But keeps on playing,
Not lifting her eyes
From off her soft white fingers
Trembling lightly
On yellowish ivory keys.

Butler County Tourism ~

Photo: Butler County Tourism
Connoquenessing Creek has been nominated for Pennsylvania’s River of the Year! It was 1 of 5 nominations picked out of hundreds of submissions. Over time this local waterway had been neglected and abused, leading to its rating as the 2nd most polluted waterway in America in 2000. Since then through Allegheny Aquatic Alliance and other organizations’ efforts, significant positive changes have been made to this creek and have resulted in the restoration of it. Now we have the opportunity to show our appreciation to this precious waterway by making it the River of the Year! We each have the ability to do this by simply voting for the Connie! The voting period is now until 12/22. It is such a simple yet powerful way to show your support for this vital local waterway. Help us spread the word and bring the positive attention to the Connoquenessing Creek that it deserves!

Linda Randig ~

Linda Randig researched and wrote this book this year and it just came out two weeks ago. It covers old Mom and Pop grocery stores within the city limits between 1903 and 2017. She found about 450 stores including well-known ones such as Mintz's, The Kozy Korner, Center Dairy and The Inn as well as many others in every neighborhood of the city. The book will appeal to those of us who are old enough to remember these stores as well as younger people who missed out on them but are interested in Butler's history. The cover features Earl Doria in his store on Mercer Street and there are another 16 pages of black and white photos.
The book can be ordered directly from Linda at
