Next to Circus Town, Woolworth's was the closest thing to a zoo that Butler had. In the back of the store were birds, fish, turtles, hamsters, mice, lizards, horny toads. I used to go in there just to look at them all.
I remember when Woolworth's had wooden floors, before they put that awful tile on the outside of the building. My understanding is that the building is entirely gone now; I've not been back to Butler since that happened.

I used to have clarinet lessons in those rooms above Woolworth's. I always remember going up the back stairway, scared.

There was a very large parrot in the back of the store and we would try to make it talk. Sometimes it would. They had a great lunch counter. Coop
