Benson's and McCarren's
It must have been a hot summer day on Main Street.

Judging from the cars, this picture is a little before my memory, but not much. Mother shopped at McCarren's; for the kids, it was Benson's. Somehow that seems apropos--mom was no June Cleaver. I remember walking under the awnings on Main Street and of how our hometown had a certain personality back then. I keep hearing (on this site primarily) that it's not that way anymore. I don't care, since I don't get back there anymore--everyone's dead or gone--and I still have my memories.
I got most of my clothes from Bensons. I remember warm days, trying on an itchy suit for Easter,no A/C back then. Miserable! I remember Mike Monfre working there. His Mom and Dad lived across the street from us on North Elm street. I loved walking on Main street, window shopping, especially Alands toy land and then maybe a pop at Woolworth's.

I worked at Benson's part-time in 1957-1958 while I was in high school. Remember Mike Monfre quite well. Wonderful guy to work with.
Remember the TV show 'Benson' from the 1980's? That was possiby the funniest comedy ever.
Below is a link to google street view so that you can see what these building look like today.
