I had a great time when we got yhis snow. No school, football games in the middle of the street.jumping into snow drifts, sledding and other winter activities.
My aunt,Dorothy "Doll" Redick was co owner of the Fashion shop. I remember going in there with my Mom. Don't think I had a pair of shoes from anywhere but Millers while growing up. Never shopped at the Hub,got our clothes from Bensons. All gone now except Millers I think. No Wal- Mart back in those days,
My third cousin on my mom's side helped out with the snow shoveling during that snow storm. He said his back hurt so bad he had to use a bed pan for weeks when peeing or moving his bowels.
This was the only time I remember school being closed when I was a kid. My mother wouldn't let me go outside to play in the snow without her watching, because the snow was so deep she was afraid I would get lost.
We lived on North Elm st,I was three. Our front porch was about 7 feet off the ground. My Dad let me jump off into the snow, had yo rescue me when I went in up to me eyeballs!
The schools in Butler Township were closed for a whole week because the buses could not get anywhere. I had a great time, sled-riding and snowball fighting for the whole week!
This was four years before I was born, but would love to see some more photos of Main Street at about this time. My grandfather's hardware store was very close to where this photo was taken, across from Cummings and Crawford's Jewelry.
I lived on Cunningham Street in an apartment above Tack's bakery at the time of this snow. I remember my dad shoveling our car out so he could go to the store for something. When he came back, someone had taken his parking place. He was really upset about that. Seems like only yesterday. Great memories.
