It would seem the kids they are playing are also in school and trying to learn. No tougher for them than it is the Butler team.
It would be interesting to know how much BHS invests in football . . . and how much the others invest too.
Give the taxpayers a break and drop football
The whole school must be in the dumps when Monday morning comes around and the footballers have to hide.
Why not play in a different league where they stand a fair chance?
Maybe the students will wake up and start that think about abolishing football at BHS.
You gotta give the kids credit for going out there even tho their weak.
It pains me to say it but at least Butler has 1 more win than the Steelers!
I've often wondered if the difference in BHS football from when I was a student (60's) to now speaks to the changes in Butler generally that I often read about on this site?
Well, at least they were in good shape for a little while........then the tsunami/earthquake/nuclear explosion hit!
Just get good grades and a good job - nobody will care in 20 years that you had a down football season back in 2013. If they do, then they are still living in high school.
I give the kids credit but hate to have them despondent over football. There must be a way out of the misery.
Its very easy to go on a blog and complain about and trash that you couldn't possibly do. The Butler football program has many players playing college ball and spreading the great lessons they learned during their tenure with the Golden Tornadoes. Its easy to hide behind a computer screen.
If I were coach
Want to waste six dollars and three hours on a beautiful fall evening? Attend a Butler Golden Tornado football game. The loudest cheers are heard at halftime as the outstanding Butler Band takes the field. Many fans leave after the band’s performance.
Why can’t Butler compete in AAAA football? Consider these points.
Unlike many of their opponents, they conduct no formal, organized off-season (year-round) program. The team is not together for many months at a time.
The team does not distribute a playbook to its players at any level. Even in a basic format, it would be a valuable tool. This would enable players to study their own individual responsibilities on each play. The playbook could be issued at the junior high level and used through high school.
Live tackling at practices throughout the week is very limited or non-existent. I understand that this is done to limit injuries, but by teaching proper technique through repetition, player safety is enhanced. How can the coaching staff expect players to turn on a switch and aggressively tackle on Friday nights?
Isn’t coaching about relating to adolescent males? The ability to look for and adapt to the strengths of the roster, instead of forcing a square peg into a round hole, is essential to being a great coach. Shouldn’t a coach be there to encourage and lift up his players?
Lastly, the Golden Tornado roster numbers upwards of 80 players, but many are spectators. Many players are playing on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. This is common in single A football or with smaller rosters. In many cases, Butler is undersized compared to its opponent. Might a fresher player, of similar ability, be better able to compete?
As the season trends toward an all too familiar path, with lopsided outcomes, continue to support the hardworking, dedicated players — but question how we got here. Butler football will return to its glory days when all the athletes sitting in section six on Friday nights, in glorious Art Bernardi Stadium, return to the field.

I thought high school football was for fun. I didn't know it was this important to my life.
That's the problem today with kids and high school sports. Some just play for fun and don't give a darn whether they win or lose. Alot of parents today think it should be "every one should get to play" Well if you aren't playing to win, don't play. And parents, there comes a time when you have to realize your little one just doesn't have what it takes and doesn't deserve a spot on the high school team. Play recreational sports.

If I get to see football and an outstanding band for 6 dollars, it doesn't sound like a wasted evening to me. If the kids play and give their best effort, that is all you should want. You want glory days? Focus on fixing up the city first.
Big colleges used to send scouts watch the Friday night games. I wonder if any were there in recent years.
Sounds like you might have been one that just wanted to be part of the team with no talent. Sorry if I offended you. If the shoe fits, wear it. Just sayin.

I'll bet the boys are hitting the weight room and working out in anticipation of another season, I imagine the coaches are scouting the school for some new prospects also

The job of Butler High School football coach is now open.
The Butler School Board decided this week to not bring back Clyde Conti as varsity coach next year. He has held the position the past three seasons. In that time, Butler's record has been 7 wins-21 losses.
The Golden Tornado's next head coach will be their fourth in eight seasons.

1 win and each loss a blowout. This from the program who's district is among the largest in the WPIAL. All those eligible athletes, yet results that would be expected from a single-A school. Baffling.
