I remember watching the soap box derby on main street, standing in front of Howard Johnson's. That would of been in the late 50's.

When did the quit having the Soap Box Derby

In the mid to late 50's the derby was run down the North Main St. hill. A friend of mine won and got a trip to the nationals in Ohio. One problem was that they used the lanes of the highway and they were slightly different in slope. If you drew the "fast" lane you were home free. Also, you needed to make it as heavy as the rules allowed. So much for Soap Box Derby strategy from a bygone era.

I entered in 2 of the events in late 40's, no later than 1950. They were sponsored by the Optimist Club and were called Orange Crate Derby.
