That used to be the busiest corner on Main Street. Troutman's was on the other side of the street.

There were so many great stores downtown - Aland's Toyland, Reed's Hobby Shop, The Hub, Honse Furniture, Murphy's, Woolworth's, Montgomery Ward, Jaffes, ETC.
Each had a personality and memorable employees.Mike at The Hub knew how to fit a suit!

I remember them all. Please, where was the last location of Jaffe's, just want to know if my memory is correct. And....what was this building previously?

Thanks,
Deb

I jerked sodas at the SunDrug after school. Tried to make my friends sick by mixing the first ever chocolatebutterscotch coke, and others. Ate frozen strawberries in the basement freezer. I also worked at Tapers Jewelry store. ~ 1955-1956

The last location of Jaffe,s was a couple of doors south of Troutman's. That building was Montgomery Ward before that. It is now a professional office building. The old Jaffe's is now a bank.

AM FAMILIAR WITH THE STORE ALTHOUGH I DON'T REMEMBER EVER GOING IN. ONE THING THAT DID AMAZE ME WAS THE COIN OPERATED TELEPHONE BOOTH OUTSIDE ON THE OFF SIDE FROM MAIN. PEOPLE WOULD DROP COINS INTO THE SLOT AND THEN THEY COULD TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE!

Butler has lots of nice antique stores downtown now.

Remember all the stores downtown well. Had a sandwich at the lunch counter when I was going to BJHS and BHS. I remember Monkey Wards was an unairconditioned dump. In the 50's, if MW had a fullsized store, Sears Roebuck only had a catalogue store and vice versa. We used to drive over to the Sears in New Castle as it was vastly superior to Butler's MW. Was Reed's Hobby Shop the one on the second floor? We used to go up there and I spent my lawn mowing money on model ship and plane kits.

My mother Bernice Stakley worked at the lunch counter in Sun Drugs back in 1967-68 as a waitress. I remember her coming home tiered and her feet hurting her.

This building was originally the Comique Theater and showed silent movies. I also remember that on the side of the building there were basement entrances for a barber shop and the office of the taxi cab company. We used to always ask our mother to order a cab with the pull up kids seats in the floor.

There was also a taylor shop in the basement in the late 50s. I worked at JC Penney while in high school and would often take clothing there to be altered. I always enjoyed getting out of the store and walking the 2 blocks to the shop.

enjoyed reading the comments. I lived next door to the Tapers family; graduated in 1957. I knew many of the store owners. My father-in-law owned Irwin's on Main Street and my father owned American Furniture , also on Main Street.

I remember Davey & Hilliards up off the Diamond. Does anyone remember what year Troutman's closed? (Is Troutmans on the blog somewhere?)
