Msgr. Spiegel was still there in the 60s when I attended SPS. Anyone remember the terror of getting picked for the morning "panel?" But he sent the entire school to the movies on several occcasions...one film I remember seeing was "Lilies of the Field" with Sidney Poitier.

Awe yes, the PANEL, the May Processions, the shelter house, and many other memories.

Msgr. Spiegel was truly what you think of when you say pastor. He made St. Paul's. No doubt about it!

Too bad his spirt and tradition has not carried on in the world today.

Yes...
Spiegal's Private Slaves: SPS.

The Panel.....if you didn't know the answer you suffered not only with him but with the nun when you got back to the room.

I'd forgotten about the movies...

I thought he was terrifying--and the one at St. Peters, Father Weisenberger, was of the same mold.
There was such a rivalry between the two schools--ridiculous now when I look back it.

I attended SPS through 5th grade ('62 to '63) before moving on to Bon Aire school for 6th grade. At one point, Msgr. Spiegel was taking confession in a booth set up in the hall -- no idea why. When my turn came I went in and confessed my usual couple of lies, or curses, or sassing my mom or whatever, but for some reason my regular standards totally set him off. He was so outraged that he got out of his box and opened up the door to my box that he might behold the very face of evil, I guess. It was more than a little startling, but some nuns hustled over to rescue me and led him away. The Lord was moving in mysterious ways that day, for sure :)

Don Fox, BHS class of '70.

I graduated from St.Paul School in 1963. I loved going to Catholic school. I,to this day, thank our mother for raising us Catholic and for sending us to SPS. Our dad was Presbyterian. I sure miss those days of long ago. I remember all the Rosary processions. Seemed like we did that a lot and were always in church, but how I miss all of that. We were all so lucky to be there. I eventually married and moved away. I wish I could go back in time and relive it all over again! We called SPS "Spiegel's Private Spies" back then and called the nuns Penguins. Got my fingers smacked several times. Came for one reunion years back. One of the best times in all our lives though at SPS. We all will never forget it.
