Our Children's Guardian ~

During her nearly 40 years as a school crossing guard, Doris Mary Riddle [† Sept 2006] helped thousands of children in the Butler area make it safely to school. She started working as a school crossing guard in 1950 and was assigned to Monroe Street, where she helped St. Paul School pupils cross the street.
In later years, she was assigned to a Mercer Street post to cross Broad Street elementary pupils. But the majority of her career -- nearly 30 years -- was spent at a post on New Castle Street helping West End Elementary School pupils.
We thank you, Doris.

Thanks, Charles, for the note about my cousin, Doris Riddle. She was a special lady!

I would like to say Mrs. Riddle was more then our guarding as I grew up…She was my friend. Living in the same neighbor hood for 22 years I knew her from my first day of school until my last day (6th grade) at West End and for years after that. I was a School Patrol person and she would walk me to school in the morning and sometimes I would walk with her home. Her dedication to duty and us kids, I will always cherish.

This little lady should be the example for all people to use to become all they can be. A wonderful lady who really loved her job more then any one person should. Every child that she watched over was truly blessed including my own two sons. Thank you Mrs Riddle

If anyone has pictures of former street guards I would be most happy to post them on this blog for you.
