Route 8 North of Butler ~ The Old Stone House

The Old Stone House
Built 1819
As children we heard frightful stories about what happened here, everything shrouded in mystery.

The house was run-down and in ruins when we were kids. We always saw it on our way to Stoughten's Beach near Slippery Rock.

We, too, used to pass by on our way to Stoughten's Beach and would always invent stories about scalpings, etc. All were figments of our imagination. The actual incident there was much more tame than anything we ever conjured up.
It still stands there and since I now have a house in Franklin, I go by it quite often. It is now a sedate landmark. In our days, it was more pristine, meaning almost falling down.

That blue drawing of the Old Stone House was used in the 1950's and 60's on the cover of photo prints sold by Hopie's Camera Shop owned by Harry Price on Washington Street. I have many family photos with that picture on the front cover.

I remember passing it when we went to Slippery Rock. Wasn't it located just before the "Y" where there were some sort of rare flowers according to the sign. As kids we surmised that it was haunted. Glad to hear it's still there. Should make it a historical sight.

I went to Bon Aire school and we made jewelry and sold it to raise money for the old stone house to be rebuilt and turn into a museum.
