another perfect season

Frustration and embarrassment for the kids even though they play as best they can.

It's not logical that Butler's Junior High, 9th Grade and Junior Varsity teams have had consistantly winning seasons but when they rotate into the Varsity level, they don't. There's obviously talent but something is breaking down somewhere.

My theory is as long as Bernardi is on the School Board, he will prevent a winning Varisty coach from being hired.

Perhaps the record of poor performance is due to nutritional INSUFFICIENCY brought on by years of consuming hoagies and pop!

Anonymous said...

all kids consume hoagies and pop, so that couldn't be it, I go w/ the Bernardi idea

WOW... what a way to rub their noses in it!!! Thanks Charles.... you did it again!

Holy cow!! Have the enrollment numbers at BHS gone down over the years or what? They don't look like they even have enough players to field a team from the picture! What happened? I graduated from BHS in '91, and I remember we had a big team and a TON of school spirit! I applaude those boys for sticking with the program, especially under the obvious circumstance. I don't live there anymore...but when I last went home to visit the family, I went and saw their field....looks like a college team should play there! So nice! Its a shame that the program is struggling. Stick with it boys..you juniors need to work really hard and recruit now in the offseason-become leaders, and work hard...in the end, it will pay off! Good luck next year Tornados!!

No offense, but don't be an idiot and blame Charles for informing people from Butler scattered around the world about how the team's doing. He most certainly is not rubbing anyone's noses in anything, just passing along information.

I refuse to read the rag that is the Butler Eagle (not that you can online) and it's next to impossible to find out Butler's results on a week to week basis because the team has been so bad. It's not Charles' fault the Tornados are 9-44 since he started his blog in 2005, nor is it his fault that Butler has lost 23 games in a row.

I can pretty much bet that a lot of Charles' readers are former athletes who are pretty upset with what was once a proud program turning into - well, whatever it is now. Good for the apparently few kids who are sticking with it, and hopefully Rankin can help revive the tradition and erase some of the damage that's been done the past 15-20 years.

A Nonony wrote: "Charles loves Butler's doom and gloom.... thats all he reports here!!!!!!!!"

Graciousness!! One would guess that A Nonony has yet to read the wonderful story that Charles wrote about (with pictures) of the newest skyscraper being built on North Main Street with the tunnel under the hill that emerges just north of the 422 bypass.

The 33 story edifice will have a floor dedicated to each of the previous winning ball teams of BHS along with geological items found during the dig of George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Alex Limput, who was well known throughout Western Pennsylvania for hurling a 32 pound shot across the creek, swollen as it was, during the '84 Olympics which were held at the newly constructed grounds near Deshon Veterans Hospital. This is a magnificent achievement financed completely by Girl Scout Troop #235 and their tireless sales of the trove of rough diamonds found not far from Armco Hill in a long forgotten cave by a group of very brave spelunkers who braved the dangers.

Keep up the good work Charles and pay not a nonny for the naysayers of our fair city!

I remember when we played Beaver Falls and new Castle ,those games were big time rivalries, what went wrong ? been gone for a long time but this makes me sad.

But they do have nice uniforms!!

yeah nice and white!!! not a speck of dirt!! ....and i'll hold my breath on that skyscraper because i love being a nonony!

I can't say this result is a kids fault. It's the coaches! And he'll be lucky if they stay in the team!

I do believe the kids play in the game not the coaches. Everybody likes to always blame a coach... in high school kids are not pros and yes they do stink alot.

Butler could not have had that many bad coaches over the years. Rankin was a very successful coach at North Allegheny. There are many reasons Butler is no longer successful. Just to name a couple:

1. Butler is in a section with many big and wealthy school districts where there kids attend many, many high quality football camps, and have personal trainers. Butler is still very much blue collar.

2. Butler football players have inherited a very arrogant attitude that they are gods because they play football for Butler High. They don't need to win to be the cool guys.

3. If you have the correct Butler sports pedigree, one gets pushed ahead in the early years.

Your comments about "why" are right on the mark!!!

What a mean angry person you are to call someone a midget and accusing someone of being a drug addict. Have you heard of anger management? Or perhaps your just a sad angry person who voted for Obama. Either way its sad to know Butler has these kinds of people living there.

Anonymous said...

Well I see Coach Rankin has resigned so I guess there'll be a search for another coach now, maybe time to bring back Bernardi and see if he still has the magic, I personally doubt it but what are you going to do ?

The Post-Gazette reported Butler as being the largest school in the WPIAL. Where are they? The photo looks like a single or double A team?!

As to blaming coaching, that may be true to an extent, but only a very small one at high school. Coaches don't recruit there and have to make due with the mental and physical genetic material provided by the districts parents.

You can't win the Triple Crown with a plow horse you know!

I confess that I was not much of an athlete at BHS, in fact, I was not an athlete at all so you should not wonder why I always was puzzled over the attention football recieved.

Granted athletic endeavors should be a part of any rounded educational experience but academics should be the prime focus of a school system. I would be much more impressed if BHS could report that 80% of its graduates completed college than the very few who are successful in the sport of their choosing.

It really isn't all that important, in the grand scheme of things, to have a winning High School football team. The emphasis should be primarily on academics. That is what will serve the most best over the long haul.

And I am unanimous in that!

this picture is probably the seniors

It is my belief that sports in general is given way too emphasis in Butler --- kids are expected to perform at a certain level and, when they fail to achieve this goal, they are humiliated and ostracized. Sports should not be a determining factor as to whether or not someone will excel in life, there are so many other pathways to select from

I'll bet Butler High has a killer bowling team!!

Anonymous said...

as a matter of fact they do, their rifle team kicks ass also.

And the girl's underwater basket weaving team has a superb record...best in the WPIAL.

Of course, the glory days were the early '50s when Peggy, Donna,Sylvia, and Bill were doing their stuff to the amazement of denizens of Butler.

The Butler Golden Tornado Marching Band is awesome, though; and are a highly regarded band amongst US high school marching bands.

where is Terry Hanratty when you need him. I believe he led Butler to the WPIAL championship, then led ND to a number one ranking and played for both the Steelers and the Tampa Bay Bucs. Also Jim Green (ND) and the Saul boys who also went to the NFL. Obviously, somebody is screwing up badly when you can't beat Mars. Shame!!!

Anonymous said...

Amazing that this is the same school system that produced at least four NFL starters--the three Saul brothers plus Terry Hanratty. As much as anything, it reminds me of how much Butler has changed since I was a boy and attended Butler High.

For the record, Charles, this is a wonderful blog and I'm glad you continue posting.

Unlike Charlie Sheen they ain't Winning but alot of typical Butler whining going on, are you people so hard up to relive your days of past that you have to dredge up the Hanratty and Saul names, GET A LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

...weren't nearly as many morons in Butler when I was growing up, either.

I just want to know where you got this photo Charles- I believe it was from my website for the Football Team???

Kudos to the poster who cited the historic sense of entitlement and putting pedigree over talent as critical reasons for the putrid state of BHS football.

In HS sports it is about the players. If they don't have the raw genetic material (parental perogative) with good attitudes and aptitudes for the game it won't matter if Jesus Christ is the coach!

The idea that it is numbers or money is hogwash!

Anonymous said...

When did Hanratty and the Sauls win either a PIAA or WPIAL championship? For a school to fail to do so with 3 future NFL players in the same graduating class is embarrassing!

Anonymous said...

No need to blame Bernardi. What I see is the failure of the midget league to generate future high school players. At least Bernardi worked with the midget league coaches to give the kids the basic skills and principles that would be needed when they moved up to the high school level. And throw in a few parent's egos that thought their son should be a star at a quad A school and the blamed the coaches for not seeing their star statis. Not many parents will let the coaches coach and let their boys fend for themselves to make a difference on the team. Todays parents don't want that, they want to guide their boys to star statis to boost their own egos. I had 2 sons and 4 nephews who played under Bernardi over the years. Most of those were winning years and sell-out crowds.

They need the Matt Clement approach to coaching. You play as a team. He sat his two best players when they didn't live up to the team concept and walked out on their daddy's when they were upset that junior wasn't bigger than the team. When you watch our football team, it is just a bunch of individuals and not a team. Bernardi would never have put up with a team losing by 24 points and seeing two of his players jump chesting each other like they were Super Bowl champs when they were losing big.

I enjoyed watching the Sauls playing when I went to BHS. It has to do with the coaches, but, also has to do with the mindset of the kids. If you are in Texas, you have heard of the Katy Tigers. During football season, there are times when there are no tickets left for one of their football games. My oldest son graduated from there in 69 and we have had season tickets since that time. Back the school and back the players. We have about 1000 season ticket holders who show up for every game. Our last playoff game was held in Rice College Stadium and had over 42000 people in the stands. Get behind the team.
