My father grew up on McClain Avenue. He was born in 1910. He told me that when he was a young boy, South Monroe Street was called "Lookout Avenue" becaause of the view of Institute Hill area--as well as the entire sawbelly obtained from the vantage point of that bridge. He also told me that boys were very territorial in those days, and that other boys, if not of Italian descent as as they were, better "lookout" if they tried to pass through their neighborhood. He might have been joking about the last bit...hopefully! :)Georgia Nanni Taviranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14858576.post-64747242936226256112010-02-21T06:25:08.197+01:002010-02-21T06:25:08.197+01:00kumbuya koolaid is an excellent description of tho...kumbuya koolaid is an excellent description of those who just dont have a clueAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14858576.post-54119016828124820102010-01-14T21:02:24.319+01:002010-01-14T21:02:24.319+01:00Monroe Street in that area of town was once upon a...Monroe Street in that area of town was once upon a time called Lookout Avenue thus Lookout Point.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14858576.post-91890831178139620022010-01-06T14:34:05.579+01:002010-01-06T14:34:05.579+01:00I for one am so happy that bridge is repaired.
