Will this be the turn-around year??

They broke a 23 game losing streak and the town went wild.

I am a current Senior player for butler and feel that the team and coaching staff have a tremendous amount of positive energy. It's a fresh start in combination with this positive energy that is forcing the program to improve.

Yes, they beat a double or triple A team. New Castle isn't the old New Castle which was about the size of Butler. We will see how they do against teams their own size.

Congratulations BHS Golden Tornados. We're proud of you. Class of 1965

Typical Butler Football attitude. They win one game against a much smaller triple A school and they have that old-time Butler Football attitude. They got killed last night 49-7 and NA could have scored a couple of more times in the fourth and beat them 60 to 7.

many of the biggest drunks and druggies in the school play on the football team and we hold them up as some kind of celebrity.

Typical "football attitude"? Encouragement after ending a long losing streak and acknowledgement of kids working hard for a positive purpose should be the typical attitude projected by adults. The typical BHS football attitude wasn't just the won and lost record, but teamwork, sportsmanship and the experience of competition. It was, and should be a positive learning experience that is part of a larger educational and character building opportunity. Win or lose, kids work hard to part of a football team - daily practice, heavy hits, studying play books, etc. They don't deserve to have their efforts and hopes trashed anonymously. To be lumped together as “drunks and druggies” is beyond reproach. It never ceases to amaze me that this well meaning nostalgic blog has become such a forum for negativity and a bully pulpit for malcontents. In my opinion, a little positive home town spirit would serve everyone well and maybe help lift Butler out of the doldrums.

Jerry,I agree 100%. Thats how it was in our day, sports players were an part of school life, just one dimension of many wonderful activities. We had some good players too who went on to the pros. Terry Hanratty and the Saul brothers come to mind. Everyone was part of the school community.

Here in Texas not so. High school football is akin to church on sunday Football fans don't care about grades, quality of education but what kind of football program a school has. Families move just to be in a district with a better football program for their kids. Many players in wealthy districts spend their summers at high dollar football camps.Stadiums are breathtaking , also they take away monies from education programs. Some schools have more coaches and assistants than a pro team. Players get away with whatever they want, rules are for the non footballers.

When the Packers were here against the Steelers for the Bowl, they were really impressed with the indoor practice facility assigned to them,it was a high school facility. One more rant. The budget crunch mandated cuts in school budgets. My daughter is a librarian at Keller school district. The district cut out school busing, fired teachers and there are 30 or more kids in a class. The district has not one,but two grand new football stadiums,a couple os assistant coaches laid off. I haven't heard of any 6 figure salaried head coaches that got axed.

All this builds kids with an entitled, arrogant attitude and no self responsibility.

Jerry,I'll take my memories of our class of 65 over the mentality here today. I feel sorry for these kids but thankful it's not me. I hope it is different in Butler these days than here.

To say that many of the Butler High don't have an arrogant attitude over the years must have their heads buried in the sand. I also agree with the post that a good number, not all, of the players are some of the big partiers. I kind think of a couple "stars" who have both been arrested for drug dealing.

Anonymous said...

How can you have stars on a team that goes 1-24. Something is seriously wrong when a school as large as BHS posts that kind of record. I know that the city has lost about half it's population since the fifties but you have the surrounding townships from which to draw students.

I knew it wouldn't be long till the Hanratty & Saul names were trotted out. Why not throw out Capazuti and Bo Voelkers names also. Hell let's go full tilt and throw out Red Uram and Art Bernardi names. Men the glory days are over

I heard one of our former coaches got caught stealing steaks from Friedman's Bilo Market, but because of who is was they did not press charges. Heard it from an employee who witnessed it.
If it had been some poor kid from the Island, better believe Carol Bitter would have pressed charges.

I am a critic of the football program and think the peaches and cream view of it in the 60s and 70s is ludicrous at best.

However, I am equally certain that all the players are not arrogant fools and am glad to see the losing streak broken for their sake.

A win is a win whether it’s triple A or quad A. Its improvement that the program is achieving. I also love the people who say that the team is a bunch of drunks and druggies. It’s like saying that the people in 60s and 70s never partied. That is a shame to think that way. That’s not how it is, yes there are druggies in butler but they don’t bother to play football. I also would like to mention I am a senior player and one of the few kids still living in the institute hill area of the city. The names of hanratty and Saul brothers won’t die. Take it from me, the photos of the classes 75-78 as well as other great players are proudly displayed in the locker room today. It makes me furious to see the false negative comments. Those comments will only further push me and the team to shut those people up.

I understand there was more than one episode for the coach with sticky fingers but of course since he is connected swept under the rug

Hey, give those kids credit and the coaches too. They are putting something together this year.

I checked the PIAA listing of schools in Butler"s district. Butler has over 1100 male students while the next largest school is 980 something. With that large of an enrollment BHS should dominate the district and not post a 1-24 record. Whoever the last coach was he should have left town under the bus.

Yep, the program is really going great. Butler got killed by the second worst team in the section 35-0.

Guys, the program is 3-27 over the last few years. Not quite the Steelers so how would you describe the program?

I believe Conti from his previous schools is an excellent coach. I am sure Rankin was also a good coach. But if you don't have the horses you are not going to win.

I would hate to be the teacher of the BHS Student who has to use vulgar terms to try to defend a team that is obviously a very bad team.

He sounds like a real rocket scientist!

This program was still good into the mid 1990s. What happened is anyone who was good moved away and never came back, which means all the family names you've known for years and all that talent that made BHS football good are long since gone.

JV Team is 4-1 so I am thinking maybe we will have a team next year!

Anonymous said...

I'm sure there will be a team next year, the question is will they be able to beat the West Sunbury Wildcats or the Island Bulldogs ?

I've been gone from Butler a long time and I guess the current state of affairs vis-a-vis Golden Tornado football is an appropriate symbol of how things change, sadly. When I was growing up, Butler High football was a perennial WPIAL powerhouse--although they never won the championship---still, the team was highly regarded, full of talent and the stadium rocked every Friday night. Too bad, but then, things do change. It's just that when one has been gone for so long, the change is all the more striking, I guess.

When do you think these boys have time to drink and do drugs? Community support goes a very long way. It is not about the past, rather it is about the future. The team is losing numbers because the coaches play the same 11 kids both ways. Who wants to commit to a team when chances are you will be riding the bench all season no matter how hard you work. These are great kids who deserve our support rather than criticism. They are not the ones calling the plays.

butler high is the greatest school of all, give a cheer, loud and clear, for our dear old butler high BUTLER HIGH !!!!!WWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

Anonymous said...

Wow, Butler lost again to a AAA team.

I wonder if they could beat the chearleaders.

Anonymous said...

Yes, THEY could probably beat almost anyone given the proper leadership. It's the man calling the plays that need to worry about the cheerleaders. Why don't you get out there and show them how to do it superstar. Coward.

Anonymous said...

To ALL who leave negative comments about the team, why not have the cahones to at least sign your name. Shameful cowards, putting down a team of young men who work their asses off all year. I would like to see you armchair quarterbacks do a better job. Go BUTLER, those who matter are still proud of your efforts.

seasons over and they managed to garner two wins. time to hit the weight room and get ready for next year hopefully they can build upon this year.

Anonymous said...

Yes, maybe next year they can beat the midget league champions?

Without judgmentalness, emotion or finger pointing, would someone knowlegable explain to a former Butlerite just exactly what's happened to Golden Tornado football? In the 60's and 70's, teams from Butler were powerhouses, always in title contention, always competitive and (almost) always sold out. It's hard to remember when(if ever) a varsity team had a losing season. What happened?

Anonymous said...

I think every HS in Butler County is in the WPIAL playoffs except BHS. That should tell you there is something rotten in the BHS athletic program. Could be the principal and/or the coach. 2-7 with all seven losses of the blowout variety stinks. Particularly when BHS has one of the largest male student enrollments in W. Pa.

Stein said...

The ONLY way Butler can compete with other schools in the WPIAL is if they recruit the best "athletes" in the school. Every other school does it. But it is my understanding that the best kids on the team right now dont get to play...too much politics apparently. Clyde Conti is a fantastic coach and a great overal person. I was one of his students at Slippery Rock his very first year coaching at SRHS and he was a class act. Give Conti a chance and Butler may have somthing to build on down the road.
