If the nicest building in a city is the prison, then the tail is wagging the dog. Just another example of government waste.

a bigger prison is just in time for the clientele. gotta keep up wif dem thuggs. good location too!

A new prison may have been needed but not in the location it was built on. The extra expense for land purchase and moving underground phone lines was ridiculous. We had land to use on the Sunnyview property. A few County Commissioners really put it to the tax payers for many years to come.

Why smack in the middle of downtown?

Farmer/Commisioner Jim didn't want to use sunnyview land, as far as location it was close to courthouse

County jail belongs next to county courthouse. No transportation costs that way, and much less a safety risk. And at the rate things are going, keep it close to the downtown center of crime.

Speaking of crime. The City Police Department must be on a secret mission because they are never spotted in the city except for car shows and festivals.

I just saw 2 city firemen riding seguays. Laziness has hit a new low.
It's time to learn from other cities and go to a volunteer unit.

It's not just Butler. It's nationwide. Police have replaced "serve and protect" with "harass and incarcerate."

get your own gun... you dont need police to protect!

I think this jail is a big joke. It locks up less problem criminals and lets the problem and repeat offenders out. They also are let sex offender and prediter out and keep probation violaters in even if they did not do a violant crime. How comfortable does that make me feel? I don't know who chooses who gets out and who stays in, but they say violent criminals are not allowed on community service and work release and I have seen many repeatedly be left out to do community service and work release. The unfair problems with this is some violent criminals are left out and some are kept in. Only thing I can figure is it must be who you know and who has money. Another situation that is a HUGE joke is the visitation. First come first serve. Who has 2 hours in an evening to wait in line, sign up and only to have to return for a visit? The food is another situation. The commisary is glad about the food situation because prisoners (if they are lucky to have someone on the outside to put money on the commisary for them) buy food because they are still hungry. Great profit for the commisary. There are so many unfair situations regarding this new prison that I could go on and on and the worst thing is this is what our tax dollars pay for. hmmmm?????????????

Totally unfair situations. And don't let the prison fool the public on how great it is and all the fancy security. How come they never informed the public about the drugs that were brought in by community service inmates back in August, or how many inmates tested positive. Not all community service workers are searched daily when returning. Or how about the knives left loose in the kitchen for anyone to take. Then there was the male inmates tampering with the food trays.Pregnant women do not get medical care, or nutritional required to be healthy. Then the medical staff reduces or cuts medically needed medicine. They raised the commissary prices. They do not give you soap to wash with but they stress hygiene. It takes 2 wk.'s to get your commissary. And 1 roll of toilet paper a week, They charge you for extra.Metally ill inmates are locked in cells 24 hr. a day. They are allowed out for 1 hour a day to shower and walk about. Thats if they are actually allowed out most of the time they are not. They discriminate against women. They are not permitted prison jobs. Men Only.. And most incarcerated are non violent offenders as like probation violators and domestic relations. More hard core criminals are released after a week or two. So there is just some of the great aspects of the NEW butler prison

agree. The new prison is a huge joke, and I also think an outside agency should be monitoring the BOOKs on this venture alot of over costing and charging is what I see and hopefully it will all be accounted for. Ive heard about the toliet paper ration and think maybe the gov office would be interested in that issue and the fairness to women issues as well.
as for the police being on a secret mission I agree with that as well except no one told them what it was!! the reason they harass and try to intimidate is becausing they know the whole town is humored by their presence, law obeying citizens know how to protect themselves & their property & look the other way when need be, rather than involve the local squad and possibly make any situation worse. no one wants to end up in the 50 million dollar prison without enough Toliet paper now do they?

This county is very misled by the new facility. The guards are allowed to do whatever they please to the inmates, even if the inmate is innocent of what the correction officer says he did. Don't get me wrong, I do believe prisoners should be jailed for their crimes by the law standards, but it should be fair and correction officers of this Butler county prison take their power to extremes.
Examples: a Correction officer (CO) hit an inmate on the head with a phone. I have heard countless stories from people once prisoned in the new facility how the CO will beat the crap out of an inmate and get away with it and also the prisoner gets a misconduct put against him. I was told how the CO's will take the prisoners items from them and get away with it and if the prisoner says anything, they are written up for a misconduct. All these idiot misconducts made up by the correction officers are taking to the judge on the inmates chance for release, therefore the inmate has no fair chance because of the CO's, not of his own doings. Personally, I would never want to hire a correction officer into any other business because of these kind of unfair actions. If this facility would spend more money on rehabilitation of these criminals, maybe our city would not have so much crime. The re-entry program the facility offers is also a big joke so far. None of the people ahead of it really know what they are doing and drag their feet at carrying out the orders of the program. Another thing about this facility, it lets out the worst criminals time and time again and they commit bigger crimes and leaves probation violaters who sometimes are not a super big threat to society as the bigger criminals are. Therefore, I have as a citizen have to watch my back wherever I go and do. Makes me wonder if I want to continue living in this county. Who monitors these work release prisoners? I know they are not going straight back to the facility from their job, although, work release is a good thing for prisoners that are honestly trying to better themselves, but this one I knew was not an honest prisoner. And this first come, first serve, waiting in line visitation system is about the worst. I do believe families should have the right to support their loved ones by visiting them, that lessens the emotional burden some of them feel for being there. Some prisoners I know do not care. If I was wrong about the abuse, they why did the Butler County Prison have a lawsuit against it? The medical aspects is horrible in this facility. Its more like will you come out of that prison well enough to be a citizen again. No sunlight is ever given to these prioners, therefore no natural vitamin D needed for good health. Many of the prisoners rights are being violated and we have so many criminals out there on the streets who should be in there. I know of a criminal, because she has stolen off of me, who has felony counts of retail theft, drug use and possesion, disorderly conduct and there are several counts against her of these, running the streets and commiting crime after crime. I don't understand why the system keeps letting her go. She has active cases dated back to 2007. I think Butler County needs an organization to oversee and do something about this justice system and this facility.

Oh the poor criminal! We don't want to violate their rights because they are such fine people. Quit your whining and obey the law. It doesn't take much to not drink and drive, do drugs, beat up people, or rob/steal. Guess what? Then you want be in prison. Oh wait! It can't be your fault. Your not responsible for your actions!

humor us, wow they sure got all the small timers locked up, while all the bad teachers and doctors are still at it, what a joke of a town, where the police run herd on the people, and wonder why they get no respect, when they show they can serve & protect, then they will receive respect, until then we all know they are just min wage workers who were picked on in high school so badly they had to be 5-0 to make them feel manly : ) 3 meals a day & free laundry & lots of r&r with no phone calls, hmmm what a deterrent lol what a joke of a city

What a vicious circle crime comes from. Parents are not allowed to discipline their children or the CYS steps in and gets the parents arrested, children get ripped out of homes that are not all that bad. I believe children need discipline (paddling in proper form never hurt any child), but all the children have to do is tell terrible lies to get their own way and later in life this leads to crime. Once in the courts system, they never get out because of probation violations. There are very few probation officers that I can say anything good about. They have cocky attitudes and don't seem to be out their to rehabilitate what the system of crime forced them to become. I must say there are some criminals that are beyond help and can certainly understand why the probation officers carry their cocky attitudes. They have to. Some PO's don't even show up to speak for the probation violators that have done all that the courts have ask. The leader of our county sees these criminals as revenue for the county and what a way to get revenue for our county. The reason many of them go to jail is because they could not afford the fines imposed upon them. Does the state pay so much a day for each person in the jail? I think it does. Some crimes I could never understand. I am not a drinker at all, but why is alcohol legal to drink, but illegal if you drink it and be on probation even if you did not do another crime other than your original run in with the law that put you on probabtion and it had nothing to do with alcohol. If we were rich and famous, probation violations are overlooked because it would look bad to the county. Another situation I heard about is the corrections officers that work for the county jail, go to the top of the tier garage and hit golf balls aimed at the new county prison and hitting it. Why is that not a crime? Anyway, as you can see, it is a vicious cycle that needs a good leader to oversee and sort and put working procedures in place that would hopefully make better citizens out of some of the criminals that want a better life but can't reach that goal because of our justice systems poor management.

Something is definateley wrong with BCP. It is kind of recycling program to keep the Prison full. Mostly full with probation violations. Here is the question. When you lock someone up for six months to a year that was not obeying the law, you take all there ability to earn an income away, all they know is crime to make money, what do you think is first and easiest way for a person just released to make money? The system sets people up to fail upon release, then as they violate there probation, catch a new charge, they go right back to BCP. It seems it is a never ending circle so the prison will always have a host of people to fill it back up.

Ok, so if you look a the latest budget numbers on the Butler County home page, they are coming due with a $72 million dollar payment for the Prison and the 911center. Wow, the 30 million dollar original price tag for the prison ended up around $45 million. That is actually a %50 percent increase over the original price tag. I understand they want to build more buildings. They could not afford the most recent projects and now they want to build again. The debt for new construction for Butler County should end up around $100 million dollars. Wow, is all I can say. Does anyone in Butler County care how much debt the current regime is racking up?

Still today the jail is a joke. The CO's are children half of them have gone to school and socialize on the outside with the prisoners.
Most of the prisoners are addicts and domestic relations.
Bad behavior is rewarded.
Commissary is expensive , food is dog food.
They do not supply any hygiene products and you get charged for the toilet paper. This jail needs to be investigated and the CO's need to be trained in manners and social skills.

I agree withSteph34. My fiance gets placed here. All he does is break parole and they send him here? I am disghusted with this place. The phone is a rip off. They say 41 cent for the first minute then charge charge 21 cents each minute after ontop of a $3.49 tax each time they call it costs $5.00. This is so wrong. It is like they punish us because our loved ones are in prison. How crazy.

I totally agree.

County used bonds to finance the "Prison" yet charge the inmates for toilet paper($1.00), medical services, phone calls ($3.25),Plunging toilet ($15.00), like citizens can afford this.. Our tax money is paying for this facility and don't think we need the added expense due to the fact that a loved one is incarcerated.. If its a self-supporting facility then we should get a tax break....
