I went to elementary school here! 1st through 4th grades, 1966 - 1969. Mrs. Patterson taught the 1st grade. We walked 2 miles to school in the snow & rain, up & down hills, walked home for lunch & then went back to school! I remember a small gym in the basement & my dad, Gene Heath, would dress as Santa Claus & visit the classrooms @ Christmas time.

Yups. Me too. I was there in the 1956 or so until Jr. High. Used to play in that playground all the time.

I went to school there back in the mid 70's. I remember the second floor was shut down. They had the office on the landing. They only had up to 2nd grade there then. Older kids in the area had to go to Emily Britian school.

In the playground is where we discovered Mrs. Desantis wore wigs!! While we were playing kick ball, the ball flew over and hit her in the head and her wig came off. What a surprise for us!!

I loved that school! I remember Mrs. Patterson and my favorite teacher (Mrs. Silverio).
I lived on 3rd St and we moved when I was 9 years old in 1972. I`d love to hear from some others that I went to school with.

I also remember going to school here at Institute Hill. I also had Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Silverio, Mrs. Desantis...lunch in the basement gym. I went to Kindergarden through 6th grade before they closed down the second floor before transfering to the Junior High school.

My father, Richard Bertocki, was a principal here for many years. Does anyone remember him? He really loved this school. I remember him taking me there when I was very young and showing me around one evening. He was really proud of that school.

Carol B ~ Do you remember what years your father was principal because the name is familiar to me.
After the 2nd grade I began taking a bus to BonAire Elementary (spell-check on that) Is that school still around?
Also wondering if anyone knows if Mildred or Carol Birch are still in the Butler area.

Mr. Bertocki was Principal at least during the mid 1960's, when I attended. Mary Heath Gordon

Mr. B. was principal in the early 6o's and maybe back in the 50's.
He also was a principal at Bon-Aire school. It's still there, but now it's Head Start pre-school.

I did not go there but my mother told me many stories about all the kids shw knew. She was "Dottie" the crossing guard. She loved all of the kids.

I remember Dottie! She was a dear! She was always so happy & seemed to love her work! Has anyone kept up with any of the follwing people: Ronna Grossman, Diana & Barbara Yeager, Tom Fox, Robert Shapiro, Robert Galante? Those are a few of my classmates; grades 1-4 @ this school in the mid 1960's.

I went there for grades 1-5 (1957-1963). I remember a beautiful set of stairs, going up the middle and then fanning out to either side once you got to the landing half way up. The tiny little gym room in the basement. The nurses room with that unmistakable smell. Watching some of the first launches into space on TV there. And my dad's welding shop across the ally.

Good memories!

Mrs. DeSantis was one of my most influential teachers and is responsible for my love of reading. Thank you.
I also was witness to the great kickball and wig debacle. Don't know if anyone present ever laughed so hard before or since (including Mrs. DeSantis). We didn't think Jeff would ever get out of the sixth grade. :)

I went to school here from 3rd grade in 1972-73 thru 6th in 1975-76, (when they closed the 2nd floor) and I headed off to 7th grade at the Jr Hi (now the Middle school, once the Sr Hi) - I loved that there was one classroom per grade - and I remember my teachers, (Mrs Desmond - 3rd, Mrs Smathers - 4th, Mr Ryder - 5th, Mrs DeSantis - 6th) - I LOVED the old classrooms with the open ended cloakrooms, the gym/lunchroom in the basement, and the year they finally built a "library" in the basement - basically a room filled with bookshelves and comfy chairs to lounge & read in, tables & chairs to study at... The year the teachers went on strike, I loved school so much that I would go anyway, just to hang out with the teachers! lol. Every tie I watch "A Christmas Story" it reminds me of this school. Such a beautiful old building, it's a shame it's not a school anymore, but I am glad to see it is still in use, even if it IS as a doctor's office, :) (j/k)

Richard Goehring, I grew up across the street from the school on First St. Hit many of baseball's on the roof of your father garage. Then had to climb up to retrieve. That's if they didn't land in the garden behind. Knew where your father lived by the Big Playground. He was a hunter, could see mounting on the walls. Your father was a hard worker... was always afraid to look in the garage as he was welding..afraid to go blind from the arc. Anyhow, never knew he had children.

Just yesterday I posted on my cousin's facebook page about how Mrs. DeSantis got hit with a ball and her wig went flying, and today I found this message board and two others who remember that day, too! Mrs. DeSantis was a good sport and laughed with us all. :D
I only went to Institute Hill for 6th grade when we moved to Butler for the year my dad was in Vietnam. It was a great old building and Mrs. D was a great teacher.
