But. . . Our Viaduct is Gone! ~

The new replacement structure will be a dual structure carrying two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound separated by a barrier. One sidewalk will be carried on the East side of the bridge. The new bridge will be on a curved alignment to the west of the existing structure and will tie into existing Route 8 south.

During W.W.II there used to be a small hut on the far side of the viaduct where soldiers would wait for rides down Route 8 towards Pittsburgh.

I like the new viaduct! I've been watching them build ut ever since construction first started and it seems to be coming along smoothly. On October 30,2005,traffic first flowed upon the new structure --- only in one lane.

P.S. Have you heard about the re-installation of parking meters along Main Street? I believe that this move will effectively kill the downtown area.

The old viaduct was built in 1917 and had become structurally deficient and obsolete. It had to carry 25,000 cars a day.

I have not seen the new viaduct yet but I hear that it is great. I remember we used to pronounce the word "viadock" when we were kids.

This is just the "beginning" as they are supposed to be building another connector over to Center Avenue. The old Viaduct Market has already moved to a new location on Center AND the guy with the "junk" store will be "evicted" pretty soon as well. (I just went into his place a couple of months ago and he DOES have a lot of "stuff" in there....I'm amazed he has any idea what he has, there is so much!)
